So, the new apple iPhone, is it worth the upgrade?
HELL YEAH!!!
Sitting in the middle of nowhere typing this for a start should give an idea of at least one benefit. Well o.k. The old one supported the web posting ability, and it will load the app store… Hmmm…
O.k. Plan B. What’s bad about it. Well the most obvious thing is build quality. The severely reduced cost is blatantly obvious in the case – plastic instead of the magnesium alloy and it doesn’t fit together quite as well round the edges, but at least the battery isn’t welded to the motherboard! O.k. I am reaching now.
Apple seem to have taken very little notice of the user community either as there are still so many features missing – cut and paste, Bluetooth profiles, decent camera, voice dial, modem hookup… Oh and the battery life still sucks… But it’s not welded… Oh I covered that already
The one “feature” that really does aggravate me though, IMAP push is not supported except on “mobile me”. This seems pretty shite.
Alert tones are still poor. When you get a mail or text a small mouse inside the unit squeeks and jumps up and down a little… the remains silent. When you power the device up, there is no alert notice like SMS until after the security screen. A flashing light would be really useful to get attention.
The GPS seems pretty stable, although I can’t seem to find a control button fort it. Applications like the camera keep asking if it can use your location, but there is no evidence that it did.
The maps support is pretty pants, it is not ready for replacing a Tom Tom, but the app store has opened the door to allow proper developers to produce really useful applications (hint hint Tom Tom). There will always be a place for iBeer though
Finally the new shape makes it a little awkward – although it fits in the hand nicely, trying to have it sit in the pocket with my 6500 classic (cuz I can’t get the iPhone on Vodafone!!!) can be tricky and uncomfortable.
But I reckon it is still worth the upgrade if you don’t mind O2.
