What are you doing Dave…

Data loss is now seemingly part of british business… first the parents register, then a few pensions scheme details, then driving records, and bank details… now the prison register… where will it stop!

I like the PA consulting wriggle though. The other people involved either kept their gob shut, or put their hand up and took responsibility… the PA angle… let’s blame a “rogue employee”.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m not sure this is a good move. On the one hand blaming a single person means you can sack them and move on, however there are 2 major consequences here.

  • What kind of hiring strategy allows you to hire a “rogue employee”, or if they weren’t rogue in the first place, what kind of working conditions turned them evil.
  • Who would want to work for a company that publicly won’t stand behind it’s employees claiming it was an accident (and then firing them in private).

Not claiming ‘accidental loss’ has also shot them in the foot in other ways in my opinion. A company the size of PA consulting and a single employee (rogue or not) was able to publically bypass all of their security measures.

We need fewer managers and more leaders in companies who value employees.

For god sake Britian, get a grip. It is exactly this kind of pathetic crap that means we are no longer Great, instead we are “The Less Rabbley Kingdom of Britian and That Cold Lumpy Bit We Should Have Given Back Years Ago”.
